Postwar Bendigo May 2026
Photos by Allan Doney
Welcome to our walk into history for May 2026.
Step back into Postwar Bendigo, walk in Allan Doney’s footsteps.
Allan Doney was a tailor and a prolific amateur photographer.
In the time after WWII, he was said to have ‘recorded what happened in front of him’. The content in these images, captured over a period of more than twenty years, provides us with more than a nostalgic journey into the 1950s and 1960s.
Postwar Bendigo was emerging from the impacts of WWII and Allan Doney was there to capture how we went about everyday life.
Doney’s images have been used widely by historians, publishers, heritage consultants, journalists, and architects. His photographs were used in the campaign by the local Bendigo Branch of the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) to prevent demolition of many significant buildings and verandas.
